AFRICAN CICHLIDS

  • Come mainly for 3 lakes in Africa, Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyike, and Lake Victoria. Species from different lakes generally do not do well together. NOT community fish – very aggressive.
  • Because they are more aggressive an aquarium should only have 1 inch of fish per 2-3 gallons.
  • Most species will grow from 4-8 inches, some species up to 20 inches. Minimum tank size is 30 gallons for 3-6 cichlids.
  • There are many different colors and they are very bright especially as adults.
  • There are hundreds of species, some will get along and some will be very aggressive with each other. Doing research for a particular species is the best way to determine what it can and can’t be mixed with.
  • Should be in groups of 3 or 4 with 1 male and 2-3 females. *Groups must be the same species*
  • Lots of rockwork and places to hide, re-arrange when adding new fish or is fish are becoming too aggressive (territorial).
  • Heater required, temperature range of 74 - 80 degrees F
  • A fine substrate or sand is recommended, they like to dig.
  • pH levels: Lake Malawi 7.4 - 8.6, Lake Tanganyika 7.8 - 9.0
  • Plecostamus are the best choice for algae eater, but because of African Cichlids aggressive nature they still may be attacked and killed. Getting a good size pleco will help.
  • Will eat predator sticks and live food, as well as frozen food.

  • Although aggressive with other fish Oscar owners usually describe their behavior like that of a dog. They will eat out of your hand and often come to the front of the tank when you approach. For this reason they are one of the more popular fish in the industry.
  • Amazon swords are the best live plants to keep with Oscars (still might get uprooted).

TETRAS

  • They are small freshwater fish from Africa, Central and South America.
  • They are brightly colored and easy to care for making them very popular in aquariums.
  • In general they range in size from about 1-3 inches.
  • Temperature range is 68-80 degrees F but most do much better at 78-80 degrees F.
  • The preferred pH is 5.0-7.0 but they will normally do just fine at higher pH ranges in the Edmonton area which are generally around 8.0.
  • Adding a piece of driftwood or bog wood will help soften the water and will help simulate their natural water conditions.
  • They are a schooling fish and it's best to keep them in groups of 6 or more of a single species.
  • They are very peaceful fish and will get along with most other peaceful community fish.
  • Larger varieties are good starter fish since they are quite hardy. Avoid smaller varieties such as neons and cardinals to start since they are more sensitive to water conditions.
  • Providing lots of live plants and places where they can hide will simulate their natural environment and reduce their stress levels.
  • The rule for the amount of tetras in a tank is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water.
  • They are fairly clean fish but will require a filter and regular water changes to maintain good water quality.
